Super Sunday 2025

Wild Man Herb

Big Chief Sysco

These are members of  Mardi Gras Indian tribes that emerge each Spring in New Orleans. On Super Sunday, the third Sunday in March, the  tribes march and reveal their suits they've been crafting since last year. There is friendly competition between tribes, but they are all rooted in the same history and traditions/

Mardi Gras Indians exist naturally - after being banned from White Mardi Gras and taking traditions from the friendship of Native Americans who housed runaway slaves. The fellow outcasts of society combined West African and native culture of masking with the costume and music that is native to New Orleans and was created by people of color.

Unfortunately, I do not know the names of everyone pictured. I had the pleasure of meeting Wild Man Herb (white and green costume), Big Chief Sysco (yellow/orange/blue costume), BOG Vonnie and more amazing artists.
